LITG at Clinton Global Initiative 2013

As you have probably been able to tell by our Twitter feed, we are spending the week at the ninth annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative!

Part of the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) brings together world leaders, philanthropists, CEOs, thought leaders and activists to “create and implement innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.”

At the core of CGI are two very grey principles: ‘actions trump intentions’ and ‘collaborate to create opportunity.’

Actions Trump Intentions
Each member/attendee of CGI is responsible for creating a Commitment to Action at the conference. This means a new, specific, measurable plan to address a major global challenge. It doesn’t end there. CGI follows up and supports the work of each member.

Collaborate to Create Opportunity
One of the aims of the Clinton Foundation is to create “partnerships of purpose” among businesses, governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals to overcome the challenges of the world. The thinking behind this goal is aligned with the Live in the Grey philosophy – bringing these entities together to leverage their resources and efforts creates an opportunity for greater success.

In the past nine years, more than 2,300 Commitments to Action have resulted in the following:
– improving more than 430 million lives in 180 countries
– planting more than 4.5 million trees
– providing kids in over 18,000 US schools with healthier foods and more physical activity

What drives CGI attendees to make such incredible, impactful change? Passion. This conference is an excellent example of people blending their personal passions for world issues and blending them into their ‘day jobs.’ It’s incredibly inspiring to witness folks mobilize around their interests and shared desire to make change.

Stay tuned for more of our CGI coverage!
